How to Use Pantone’s Color of the Year 2023 in Your Kitchen

Pantone MagentaThe color of the year for 2023 has been revealed by Pantone. Welcome Viva Magenta, announced by Pantone as “an unconventional shade for an unconventional time. “Pantone states that “It is a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength. Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative.” It sounds pretty amazing.

All that being said, this is a bold color. While not for the faint of heart, it is much more of a color chameleon then you may think.  The key is understanding if it works in your kitchen, then how it works in your kitchen, then how much of it works in your kitchen! Never fear. We have all of the ways you can bring 2023 in to your kitchen, from high to low commitment.

Accent wall

Viva Magenta is made for a high gloss, high-impact accent wall. Consider using Magenta 2077-10 by Benjamin Moore in a high gloss finish. It is a natural addition to a black and white kitchen but you do not need to stop there. It plays well with cream, gray, and mint green. Envision your accent wall with a stunning art piece in the center. It can bring a whole new dynamic to your kitchen.  You may decide that you do not want to stop with just one wall!

Cabinet (s)

This is a bigger commitment to color but there is a phenomenal payoff if it is the right choice for you. Bold, saturated magenta cabinets can bring a modern kitchen to life. You can create a completely different color palate and feel with your surrounding aesthetic.  For example, you can play with a modern twist on a classic Victorian color palette of dark, rich and deep shades of maroon, red, burgundy, chestnut, dark green, brown and blues.

You do not have to make this the color for every cabinet, either. Consider bringing in a free standing furniture piece for a focal point and get the bonus of added storage! Think about using it to paint a bank of wall cabinets that stand alone. Use it in just upper or lower cabinets for a graded color combination. You can go “shabby chic” and use it as an undertone for distressed cabinets.

Back SPLASH!

Your backsplash is the perfect place for color. You can opt for a solid magenta backsplash in a classic subway tile for a new twist. Consider a bold, geometric pattern that incorporates this color. Consider blending it with patterned tiles, floral tiles, or metal tiles. Varying shades of glass tile in the magenta color palate become your own blown glass display.   Behold These Bold Kitchen Backsplashes on houzz.com for inspiration!

Pattern up

A little Viva Magenta can go a long way in design. Consider patterned magenta wallpaper in anything from a floral to an abstract design.  You do not even have to go permanent with all of the peel and stick options that are available. Bring the accent wall back using a painted patterned design rather than a solid gloss. Thespruce.com has 10 Decorative Paint Techniques for Your Walls to help you make your vision a reality!

Last, but certainly not least, are all of the ways you can accessorize. Your kitchen is no different than your favorite go-to wardrobe pieces. They can always use a refresh with the latest trend.
